Get it here (22.98mb): Pioneers of Flight for FS-WWI or mirrored here. Be sure to read the readme, FS-WWI is required as an installation base.

2/16/09 Fighter Squadron and FS-WWI at Mod DB!

With the suggestion from a community member I have begun adding SDOE files (WW2 and WW1) to the Mod DB website. For those that don't know this website can host files, display the latest news and downloads.

The base SDOE page can be found here: Fighter Squadron at Mod DB

The FS-WWI mod for SDOE can be found here: FS-WWI at Mod DB

I am not done, as I just started last week. It will take some time to get all of the required files up.

Stay tuned for more there!

1/13/09 FS-WWI Plane Pack 5 is RELEASED!!

You read that correctly! After years of development it is finally ready for public consumption. See the main page for download links and instructions. An All-In-One installer is in the works and will be released as soon as it's ready.

10/01/08 Somme Terrain Improvements

In expectation of FS-WWI Plane Pack 5, and to further the completion of the FS-WWI mod for SDOE I have decided to further enhance the Somme terrain in light of Recon3's texture improvements. The list of improvements I have already completed or wish to complete are as follows:

-Fixed many shading oddities. Some still remain around the airfields and towns however. I'm still looking for a fix for these...

-Add "fields of battle" to font lines area

-Remove "invisible ground" that aircraft crashed into or ground objects got placed ontop of (Done)

-Add a permanent Zeppelin Shed to the terrain (Done)

-Make the two bridges able to be driven or landed upon (Done)

-Correct shading on many of the tents, hangars and buildings (Done)

-Airfield building and hangars are now mostly hi-res (Done - Recon3)

-Airfield tiles are hi-res (Done - Recon3)

-Add hi-res support to the terrain (Done)

-Fix "floating" windmills and lighting issues of the windmill object (Done)

-Correct the error that the windmills all were either Axis or Allied in the Mission Editor. Now each of the three windmill targets can be set to either/or (Done)

-Correct all Training Takoff and Landing missions so the Allied aircraft take off on the Allied side of the front and the Axis aircraft take off on the Axis side of the front (Done)

-Correct all of the airfield AI take off coords and positions. They are now not so randomly placed on the airfields (Done)

-Create a new Allied and Axis observation balloon object. The placeable object now has a squad or so of men to protect it, a few tents around and you can see the cable ran from the balloon to the ground. The men do fire on enemy aircraft, and they can also be killed or ran over (Done)

-The above mentioned object has been modified to have a flak gun. These objects are permanent now on the terrain up and down the front lines on both sides. I would not venture to the front so half-hearted now!! (Done)

-Add balloon bases to all airfields (Done)

-Add more buildings, houses and trees to the town of Bertincourt (Done)

-Add a stationary train object to the railroad station (Done)

Not all of these are 100% completed, but I am getting close. I'm also looking to add more objects on the terrain to shoot at and to liven up the atmosphere a little. I expect this terrain project to take me a couple of more months. When it's finished, I will attempt to transpose these modifications to Snowy Somme. Then, FS-WWI Plane Pack 5 will be completed and released.

5/29/08 FS-WWI Plane Pack 5 Goes Public Beta!

You read that correctly! After years of development it is finally ready for public testing. I intend to have this up for at least a couple of months so users can get a chance to try it out and report back any bugs or errors they may find. Please, please download this and try it out.

Information for downloading and installing FS-WWI Plane Pack 5 and all of the required files can be found here:

FS-WWI Plane Pack 5 Public Beta

5/01/08 AI Takeoff problem fixed!

Yes, you did read that correctly. All, and I mean ALL FS-WWI aircraft can now take off under AI control!

The solution resided in the propElements, propMM and propPitch properties. Once I plugged in a custom tweaked set of propElements numbers and adjusted the rest (Including drag), the AI can now fly these kites properly on takeoff.

This means that old and slow kites that have never been able to take off under AI control before now can! (Bleriot, Taube, Ilya V, and many many others that were underpowered) These aircraft fly within 5-10 mph of their recorded top speeds (Or right on the money in many cases) and still bleed energy and handle authentically. Campaigns and missions in which the AI need to get airborne now all work as they should. Another side-effect from this is that dogfights with the AI are more intense. The AI are now less likely to stall out and start "searching" for altitude.

5/01/08 Some important info regarding FS-WWI Plane Pack 5:

Due to the changes made in squadrons, countries and medal data FS-WWI Plane Pack 5 will NOT be compatible with WW2 SDOE. It is meant to be a completely stand-alone mod from here on out. There is no way around this due to how score.ppf and gui.ppf work.

I will be releasing this in the following versions:

-All-In-One -Individual download installer files -Individual download installer files with 8-bit aircraft textures (Reduced download size)

The FS-WWI Themed 1.6.0.6 Patch will be the only update patch to use. Standard 1.6.0.6 has been dropped.

Just a friendly heads up.

6/26/07 Some FS-WWI News

Once July rolls around I hope to get full swing back into SDOE FS-WWI. I've got a list still scratching at me that needs to get done in order for Plane Pack 5 to become a reality. Most is just polish, and one new aircraft to add to the mix: The Airco D.H.4

Here's what I got:

Bristol Scout D revamp
Fokker E.III cockpit
Halb D.II cockpit
Moska cockpit and hi-res skin
Airco D.H.4 build and hi-res skin

That is IT!!!! Once these things are completed I think it would be safe to call FS-WWI standardized and completed unless new matieral is added. It's been a long road for FS-WWI, but I think we can see the final destination now just over the next bend.

2/12/05 Zeppelin L-11 Beta 2 Released!

Possibly the largest flyable aircraft for SDOE ever built! The L-11 was a rarity in that it NEVER was shot down or lost due to bad weather in WWI. I have a feeling it will not be so lucky in FS-WWI. Read the readme file CAREFULLY for instructions. Still left to do is a hi-res skin, the Zeppelin Hangar and a new flak unit.

2/5/05 Full Somme Repaint 2 Released!

This is the 2nd incarnation of Gypsy9's excellent repaint of Somme. However, you do NOT have to have this download if you've already installed the FS-WWI On-line Standard. Having or not having this will NOT make you Incompatible on-line.

2/11/04 FS-WWI Community Update:

I thought I would keep the general public up-to-date here.

Currently the Ilya Muromets V is undergoing a revamp. I have the info now thanks to Mossie to correctly model this Russian bomber inside and out. A totally new cockpit is done being built, as well as many new model fixes/corrections (Wing thickness, upper gun terrace, landing struts and wheels) and new engines too! Currently she is getting re-painted in hi-res.

FlyXwire has skinned the Maurice Farman S.11 in full 1024x1024 glory. A cockpit revamp to come in the near future!

Recon3 is doing touch-up work on his Albatros D.I rebuild/revamp, as well as a reskinning and retexturing to go along. Progress on this is almost complete!

Currently there are 12 aircraft in the list that need to get complete for FS-WWI Plane Pack 4 to start becoming a close reality. The 3 above are in that list and as soon as they are done there will be only 9 left!

On the terrain front... I have the latest Albert terrain build from Gypsy. There are several things that need to be fixed on this. There is a second No Mans Land front lines that needs to be gotten rid of (This will require a remap and re-texture reference of these tiles) and there is a railway bridge that goes straight across No Mans Land that needs to get rotated to the other direction. Then of course there are small things like making the targets and airfields and cities match up with the Mission Editor symbols and what not.

Plane Pack 4 is going to be the best FS-WWI has to offer (As well as FS-WWI developers) This will be the signature and standard of what OpenPlane can do I hope! Progress continues, and at this time it will until everything is the best as can be, our time and talent permitting.

Plans for FS-WWI Plane Pack 4 are underway! There is a long list of texture updates and 3d modeling that I would like to see done, plus the usual refinements and some additional aircraft to be added in. Expect new and improved pilots and textures, detailed cockpit improvements in some aircraft, and newer hi-res textures. We might even have a new terrain and mission sets by the time Plane Pack 4 hits. ETA is unknown at this time. I can tell you it is not going to be any time soon, but stay tuned! The development is half the fun. As always, I am looking for any volunteers for mission making, aircraft coding, 3d modeling and texturing. So if you would like to help out, please e-mail me at: ArgonV@AOL.com

12/25/02 **FS-WWI Plane Pack 3 Final is released!**

Please see the 'Installing' section of this web site for more information.

Announcing: FS-WWI Open Beta (Plus Plan Changes)

Right, this will be the last Public Beta testing until final release. I've also changed a few things that were in the plan due to over amounts of updates. For this to all work, you MUST install SDOE fresh. I repeat again, you MUST install SDOE fresh! If you do not, and run into problems, I will be unable to assist you. It is as simple as that.. The setup is too integrated to install all of this over an existing install of FS-WWI. You will over complicate things if you try to install this over an existing FS-WWI install. If you try it my way, TRUST ME, it will be a breeze...

Think of this as a pre-test on how final release will be like. Everything that's released here, will be so on final release day in the same order, only the final FS-WWI Plane Pack 3 will have yet more updates and one more aircraft.

This is how the release will work... There are three different versions of the FS-WWI Plane Pack 3:

1. 1024x1024 and 512x512 tifs (110 Megs)
2. Only 512x512 tifs (90.2 Megs)
3. Only 256x256 tifs (73 Megs)

As you can see, there is a file size difference. You can choose to download which one based on your system and connection speed.

Also, I have updated the Somme Terrain, putting it all together in one parfile, with an installer. Should install like a breeze now! I have also put together a FS-WWI Nations Pack. This will replace Nations v2 and it is a lot smaller. It too is in an installer and should install very easily.

Now here are the three install options you have. Each is listed in the order you should install them in. I also URGE you to READ the readme files. There is very valuable information in there that is to your benefit. If you mail me asking where should I install this to, or do the kites have brakes, or what key do I press to do this and that, I will simply email you back requesting you to read the readme files provided. I made these readme files to make both your life, and mine a lot easier.

Install Option One

1. Install the 1.5 Patch to your Fighter Squadron folder
2. Install the 1.6.0.3 Patch
3. Install the FS-WWI Nations Pack (7.3 Megs)
4. Install the Full Somme Terrain (34.6 Megs)
5. Install the 1024x1024 FS-WWI Plane Pack 3 (110 Megs)

Install Option Two

1. Install the 1.5 Patch to your Fighter Squadron folder
2. Install the 1.6.0.3 Patch
3. Install the FS-WWI Nations Pack (7.3 Megs)
4. Install the Full Somme Terrain (34.6 Megs)
5. Install the 512x512 FS-WWI Plane Pack 3 (90.2 Megs)

Install Option Three

1. Install the 1.5 Patch to your Fighter Squadron folder
2. Install the 1.6.0.3 Patch
3. Install the FS-WWI Nations Pack (7.3 Megs)
4. Install the Full Somme Terrain (34.6 Megs)
5. Install the 256x256 FS-WWI Plane Pack 3 (73 Megs)

Enjoy!

7/28/02 **FS-WWI Plane Pack 3 Test 2 Posted**

This is the second Test Pack for the final full version of the FS-WWI Plane Pack 3. I put this together for you cable/DSL users out there mainly so you guys can test out all the new features and missions. You do not need any previous FS-WWI Packs/Patches installed for this. What you WILL need however is the 1.5 Patch, 1.6.0.1 Patch, Full Somme and its Update 2 and Nations v2.

Again this is not really for you slow connection users out there, as this Test Pack 2 is 94 megs. But hey, if you want to spend the time to download it, by all means! I need all the testers I can get.

Enjoy, and pour on the feed-back!!

7/27/02 **FS-WWI Plane Pack 3 Update to the Community**

Currently, a lot has been done for the next FS-WWI update! New visuals, sounds, skins, damage models, flight model tweaks, you name it!

But... As most of you have noticed not many updates have been posted recently on the status and release date of the FS-WWI Plane Pack 3. For this I apologize! Summer is always semi-slow time for Fighter Squadron development... But I assure you, come fall a lot will be happening and a lot will be wrapped up!

Most of the original FS-WWI Plane Pack 1 aircraft (Albatros D.Va, Sopwith Camel, Nieuport 17c1, Morane Saulnier N, Fokker Dr.1a, Fokkder D.VII, Fokker D.VIII, Bristol F.2b, and S.E.5a) have been finished off or are close to being finished off and will no longer require work (Which will save me HUGE amounts of time in the future) Most of the current delays in development concern the original aircraft. The Fokker D.VII, Fokker Dr.1a and Nieuport 17c1 are the only original aircraft which require any modeling work/re-work and WTG/PR is taking care of the Fokkers for us.

Once the FS-WWI Plane Pack 3 is completed, I intend to take a long break from developing FS-WWI (Lord knows I need it!) and just let things swing around for a while.

Upon my return, I *plan* on getting some help and finishing off the new addition aircraft which never got finished that were included in the FS-WWI Plane Pack 2 and FS-WWI Plane Pack 2 Patch. The aircraft which need final touches in this group are the Bleriot XI, B.E.2c, Bristol Scout D, Fokker E.III, Halberstadt D.II and Pfalz D.IIIa. Most of these just require a cockpit. The Bristol Scout D on the other hand needs a total re-work.

Now many of you are probably thinking "So what?!?!? When so I get the Plane Pack 3 that promises so much?" Well, currently there is no set release date... All I can say is that it will get done when it's done! Trust me tho guys, work will continue on it just like it always has been and it will be well worth the wait.

Thanks for your attention!
